Our Services

Complete Society Registration & Renewal Services

Mahananda Consultancy handles the full life of a registered society in every state, from drafting the Memorandum on day one to renewals, annual returns and the tax registrations that let your NGO raise funds.

New Society Registration

For seven or more people coming together for a charitable, educational, cultural, religious, scientific or sports purpose. We draft the Memorandum of Association and Rules & Regulations, prepare the first-meeting resolution, and file with your state Registrar under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 or your state's own Act.

Society Renewal & Revival

In states such as Uttar Pradesh, society registration must be renewed every five years. Elsewhere, a society that has missed years of annual filings can be treated as defunct. We renew on time, clear pending returns and bring inactive societies back into good standing.

Annual Filings & Amendments

Annual list of governing body members, audited accounts and annual returns filed with the Registrar on time. We also handle changes to your name, registered office, Memorandum, bye-laws or office-bearers.

The Process

Registered in 3 Simple Steps

We’ve taken the paperwork out of society registration. You share, we draft and file, you start your work.

To register a society in India: (1) bring together at least seven members, agree on a name and objects, and collect their ID and address proofs, (2) draft and sign the Memorandum of Association and Rules & Regulations and pass a resolution at the first meeting, then (3) file the application with the state Registrar of Societies and receive your Certificate of Registration. Mahananda Consultancy handles all three steps for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about registering, renewing and running a society in India.

Society registration is the legal registration of a non-profit association formed for charitable, educational, cultural, religious, scientific, literary or sports purposes. Once the state Registrar of Societies registers it, the society can open a bank account in its own name, hold property, sign agreements, and apply for tax exemptions and grants. It is done under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, or your state's own Act, such as the West Bengal Societies Registration Act, 1961.

At least seven members are needed to register a society in most states, including West Bengal, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana and Haryana. Members must be adults, and they can include individuals, companies or other registered societies. From these members, you elect a governing body, usually with a President, Secretary and Treasurer.

In West Bengal, societies are registered under the West Bengal Societies Registration Act, 1961 by the Registrar of Firms, Societies and Non-Trading Corporations, and applications are made online through the e-District portal. You need at least seven members, a Memorandum of Association, Rules and Regulations, members' ID and address proofs, and proof of the registered office. Mahananda Consultancy drafts the documents and files the application for you.

It depends on your state. In Uttar Pradesh, society registration must be renewed every five years. In states such as West Bengal, Delhi, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Haryana there is no fixed-term renewal, but the society must file its annual list of governing body members and, where required, its audited accounts with the Registrar every year. A society that stops filing can be treated as defunct, so annual filings matter as much as renewal.

You need a Memorandum of Association, the society's Rules and Regulations (bye-laws), a covering letter and the minutes or resolution of the first meeting signed by the founding members, PAN and address proof of every member, passport-size photographs of the governing body, and proof of the registered office with an NOC from the owner. Some states also ask for an affidavit or declaration from the President or Secretary.

Society registration usually takes a few weeks once the documents are complete. The exact time depends on your state Registrar, whether the proposed name is available, and whether the Registrar raises any objections. We prepare the application carefully to avoid avoidable objections and keep you updated at every stage.

A society suits groups of seven or more people who want democratic, member-elected management, such as clubs, associations and community organisations. A trust suits a small group of founders who want to keep control with a few trustees. A Section 8 company suits NGOs that want the highest credibility with large donors and CSR funders, and can manage stricter compliance under the Companies Act. All three can apply for 12A and 80G registration.

Yes. A registered society can apply for income tax registration, commonly known as 12A and 80G registration and now covered by the Income-tax Act, 2025, so that its surplus is exempt from tax and donors can claim a deduction on their donations. A new society first gets provisional registration, followed by regular registration that must be renewed periodically. We handle the application and the renewal for you.

Yes, with the right registrations. To receive CSR funds, a society generally needs 12A and 80G registration and CSR-1 registration with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs. To receive foreign donations, it needs FCRA registration from the Ministry of Home Affairs, which is usually available only after the society has been active for a few years, or prior permission for a specific project. An NGO Darpan ID is needed for FCRA and most government grants.

Every year, a society should hold its annual general meeting, get its accounts audited, file the list of its governing body members and any required returns with the Registrar, and file its income tax return. In West Bengal, the governing body list and audited balance sheet are due within 30 days of the annual general meeting. Societies with 12A, 80G or FCRA registration have additional annual filings.

Yes. Puja committees, sports and cultural clubs, alumni associations, resident welfare associations and similar groups commonly register as societies, as long as their objects are non-profit and fall within the purposes allowed under the Act. Registration lets them open a bank account in the society's name, hold property, and apply for grants and permissions more easily.

Usually not. Co-operative housing societies are registered under your state's Co-operative Societies Act with the Registrar of Co-operative Societies, not under the Societies Registration Act. Resident welfare associations that do not own the property, however, often register under the Societies Registration Act.

Yes. Changes are approved by the members in a general meeting, usually by a special majority, and then filed with the Registrar within the time the state Act allows. In West Bengal, alterations to the Memorandum need a three-fourths majority of members and the Registrar's approval. We draft the resolution and file the amendment for you.

Yes, if you want one expert who handles your society personally. Instead of a ticket queue and template documents, you get Memorandum and bye-laws drafted for your objects, state-specific filing, and your renewals and annual filings tracked by a consultant with 13+ years of experience.
